Our Carolina Wrens

We have a male and female pair of Carolina Wrens that have a nest in our porch. They have lived there for at least four years now. They always come around and work on their nest some, then lay the eggs, and after the babies are big enough to fly away, they leave too. And before too long they are back to start it all over again. We've watched many of their babies grow up and leave the nest. A few weeks ago I noticed that they are back again. And today, I saw them both together sitting on the rail of our deck. It's so cute to see them. I did read somewhere that the wrens find a mate and stay with them for life. So I know it is the same couple.

They first came around after Mother's Day when Lenny was a baby. Dominic and Lenny bought a porch swing for me for the screened in porch. When Dominic hung it, he had to remove some of the ceiling. He didn't put it back up right away and it didn't take the wrens long to discover this perfect spot for their nest. Oh yeah, some of the screen had come off of the porch so it was easy for them to get in. I think we can thank the squirrels for that. Anyway, after we noticed the wrens and their nest, we just couldn't close the ceiling or the screen. So, that is how it is still today. We keep our screened in porch open just for them.

I'm anxious to watch the babies learn to fly this time. I wonder if the birds have noticed that our family has gotten bigger too.

I was talking to mom the other day and told her that the wrens were back and that I saw an Eastern Bluebird at my house for the first time. She asked me if I named the wren and I hadn't. So we named the female--Mary. My grandma's name was Mary and she loved to watch and listen to birds. I guess I should name the male after my Grandad, Glen, who gave me the CB handle of "Little Wren" when I was a kid. Yes, no laughs, I had a CB handle. My sister was "Little Fawn".

I can understand why my mom loves to watch and listen to birds. It is very interesting to see their habits. Although, I will never be able to tell a bird by it's song. Mom can tell you what kind of bird it is without seeing it as soon as it starts singing.

Here are a few pictures of the kids.

It's nice to see at this young age that Brooke and Nathan are there to give a helping hand to each other. Isn't it nice that Nathan is pushing his sister in the car. Little does the picture show that he was probably trying to knock her off of it so that he could ride on it. Brooke does the same to him. Oh well, I can dream can't I.

I seem to take lots of pictures of them eating. I am just realizing that. They just do some silly things then. Brooke looked so cute the way she was eating her poptart using both hands. She looked like a little squirrel.

And Nathan is just always ready to give a cute smile and a laugh.

Brooke will not leave Lenny alone. If Lenny is in the room, she is almost always close by him. He was trying to watch Noggin and Brooke had to climb up on the chair with him. And then she took his sippy cup. Yes, I still let him have a sippy cup when he is watching TV.

Just ignore the Halloween pajamas that Brooke has on. Hey, they still fit so why not let her wear them when laundry is backed up. :-)

The sippy cup reminds me of Nathan. He always has to have everything that Lenny has and he will cry like crazy until Lenny gives it to him. It doesn't matter what kind of drink Lenny has, Nathan wants it. It can be a sippy cup, a regular cup, or a juice box. I have to take Lenny's plate off of the kitchen table before I get Nathan out of his highchair or he will climb up to the table to get Lenny's food and drink. Nathan could have the same thing on his plate but he wants Lenny's. It's really funny.

That's all for now. I had to post something today because I heard from someone (I won't mention names) that I was getting behind. :-)

Can I call you "little wren" from now on? I love it!!!

Brendan is still drinking out of sippy cups...I like my carpet too much. He drinks from a regular cup at dinner and lots of times, but in the living room and with a crazy 13 month running around, it just makes sense.

I love that Brooke follows him around, I can't wait to see you all. :-)
